I was looking through some stuff and found this quote I had written down several years ago when I read the Christina Hoff Summers’ book:
“Many schools have entirely given up the task of character education, setting a great number of American children adrift without direction. Under the current laissez-faire policy, our schools are harboring a great many inadequately socialized children. But leaving children to discover their own values is a little like putting them in a chemistry lab full of volatile substances and saying, “Discover your own compounds, kids.” We should not be surprised when some blow themselves up and destroy those around them” (200).
